Startup CostEdit

SIM cards are CHF 15, with an initial balance of CHF 15.

Internet Usage FeesEdit

Internet usage is CHF 2 per day or CHF 10 per month.

AvailabilityEdit

Mobiles, SIM cards, and refills are sold through newsagent's chains, in particular "k kiosk" and "Press & Books". These can be found at most train stations, which makes it attractive for travelers. Refill over the Internet doesn't seem possible at this time.

They promise that activation should be done in an hour. You can speed up the process by printing out the registration form at home, fill it out, and bring it to the outlet.

ConfigurationEdit

APN name: click

MobilesEdit

In a few larger k kiosk stores you can buy mobiles. Currently there are two types: a simple one for CHF 20, and a smartphone for CHF 100. The smartphone is a ZTE "Blade" Android phone branded as (Orange) San Francisco. It ships with Android 2.1 with some Orange-specific modifications. E.g. the Google Talk client was removed. The mobiles are SIM-locked to the Orange (Switzerland) network for 24 months.

SIM SizesEdit

As far as I know, only standard (large) size SIMs are sold. So bring scissors if you have an iPad.

  • In Geneva, I tried to purchase the OK-Card, but the single (!) K-Kiosk in Geneva (inside the COOP Hypermarché in Vernier, close to Geneva International Airport) sold the last one earlier that morning.

Instead, I bought the Lebara Pepaid Mobile packet for 14,95 CHF at Mobilezone, a cellphone shop also inside the COOP Hypermarché.

Inside the packet is a mini-SIM with 10 CHF credit. Also in the packet is a 10 CHF topping up card. When added, your total credit is 20 CHF (also stated on the package).

Lebara uses the SUNRISE network in Switzerland.

Lebara offers a dataplan of 120 MB for 30 days, for 4,90 CHF. Text SURF to 255 if you want this offer. The confirmation text message takes about 15 minutes to arrive. The dataplan must be confirmed before it is enabled.

Bear in mind that the data plan is autamatically renewed after your 30 days, UNLESS you text SURF STOP to 255. Rather than cancelling your subscription, your stop request will limit the data plan to the first 30 days only.

If you exceed the 240 MB, you will be charged 0,10 CHF/MB for the remaining period.

SUNRISE uses G3 and is pretty fast. One evening the network was down, but the data plan is not working in roaming mode (or outside Switzerland, for that matter). Next morning, SUNRISE was up again (a company name well chosen, indeed).

    • > If you exceed the 240 MB, you will be charged 0,10 CHF/MB for the remaining period. This should be: If you exceed the 120 MB, you will be charged 0,10 CHF/MB for the remaining period.

    • APN = internet In my case, this SIM card worked fine with all APN fields left blank. Also, PIN code access is disabled by default. I used the SIM inside a Huawei E585, so tethering is no problem either.

  • Spent the weekend in Switzerland and got a Swisscom "Easy liberty uno" SIM card for CHF 20 ($20 USD) in one of the many Swisscom shops. They activated it right there so i was ready to use it when i walked out. You get 20 CHF of credit with your purchase.

Each day of data use is 5 CHF, so the 20 CHF credit will last 4 days.

I used an iPhone 4 (you can choose if you want a regular SIM or a micro SIM at the Swisscom shop) and then just used the Skype app to make calls (make sure you add some $ to your Skype account before you travel) back to the US or Europe which only costs about 1ct per minute !

Swisscom has an awesome 3G HSPDA network so speed was great. Skype worked perfectly over the 3G connection.
