Movistar (prepaid) 3G tariff SourceEdit

Movistar can be bought in any Movistar dealer in Mexico, with most airports having one. I bought mine in the centro comercial in Juarez. The pre-paid SIM card costs $200 MXN or about $14.54 USD and comes with $50 MXN worth of credit.

Data feature packsEdit

They have a one hour plan (¢65 USD, 40 MB), one day plan ($1.38 USD, 100 MB), one week plan ($7.2 USD, 400 MB) and a one month plan ($14.47 USD, 1 GB). The assistant at the shop should be able to activate your phone for you and put in the message to activate your internet. If you'd rather do it yourself, follow these steps:

  1. Dial #100# + SEND
  2. Select the option: "Comunicación y entretenimiento"
  3. Select the option: "Internet por Tiempo"
  4. Choose the amount from the list
  5. Confirm your purchase
  6. Profit :D

Technical detailsEdit

One problem I had after this was that the card did not activate any APNs on my phone, so it couldn't connect to the internet. I did some Googling and ended up finding a default APN that seems to work:

APN: internet.movistar.mx

user: movistar

password: movistar

Movistar's coverage has been reported to be not as good as Telcel's, but towers are less crowded and top speed is much better on Movistar than on Telcel.

  • I've been told at two Movistar Mexico "Atención a Clientes" offices that as a foreigner, I cannot get a prepaid SIM for their network. I'm a frequent visitor and not a resident and don't have a visa. I don't press or demand to see the supervisor, but just go to their competitor. I'm not going to force them to take my money.

Telcel, on the other hand, does not have a problem selling me a Telcel Amigo Chip (micro-SIM or mini-SIM) for 150 pesos which included 50 pesos of airtime.

  • For Lusacel, the best link is this: http://www.iusacell.com.mx/New_Site/3G/Conexion_BAM/ The link listed on the article is leading to another service.
